Sight of Sound

These images and videos are interference patterns in metallic fluids that are created by sound - a phenomena referred to as “cymatics”. Sometimes chaotic, sometimes regular, always fascinating - making sound seen has been a passion of mine for years.

Sight of Sound - Mercury - DVA

DVA is Linsey Pollak and Tunji Beier. They are playing their piece Bistrishko Horo / Mesechina from their 2002 album “Moments of Optimism” in this iteration of Sight of Sound from 2017

Sight of Sound - Rubisco x 4

As part of the Substation’s 2020 Virtual Residencies, David Murphy created this 13 minute short film with 4 compositions by Stephen Grant. These were pieces of music created as part of their collaboration on Fibonacci’s Genie, that use the sonified genome of the enzyme Rubisco as a starting point.

Sound Sight is a cymatic representation of an excerpt from "Breath On The Tyne + Stella", a piece of music by DVA (Linsey Pollak and Tunji Beier). It was shot on a Canon 700D with no effects added - all the movement that you see is a result of what the music source does to metallic fluids.
